Fashion film cinematographer
James Coote is a fashion film cinematographer and director of photography. He has shot campaign and fashion films for Balmain (dir. Norbert Schoerner), Loewe (dir. Netti Hurley), Valentino and Celio (The Bardos), Numéro (Colin Solal Cardo), s.Oliver (Heiko Keinath) and Adidas (Jason Yan Francis), working from Paris and London across Europe.
What does a fashion film cinematographer do?
He turns the director's and the brand's intention into light, lens and movement. On a fashion film that means lighting fabric so its weight and texture read on screen, holding skin tone consistent across a day of looks, choosing optics that flatter without softening the garment, and keeping the camera language of the film in step with the stills campaign shot alongside it.
How does James light fashion?
Restrained and physical. He prefers one strong idea per set-up, light that could plausibly exist in the space, and precise control of the edges rather than more units. Studio worlds are built so the light has somewhere to come from; on location he works with what the place gives and shapes it. The result reads as atmosphere, not as lighting.
Which formats does this cover?
Seasonal campaign films, pre-fall and resort films, show and presentation films, lookbook and e-commerce video, editorial films for magazines such as Numéro, and the short social cuts derived from all of them. He also shoots fashion on LED-volume virtual production stages, as on Balmain Pre-Fall 2022.
Can film and stills be shot together?
Yes, and on most fashion campaigns they are. James plans the motion lighting to coexist with the photographer's set-up, agrees a shared colour and exposure reference, and schedules the moving-image coverage around the looks so neither team waits on the other. Where the brand wants one continuous visual world, the film and stills share the same lighting plan.
What does a fashion film shoot day look like?
Pre-light the day before where the budget allows. On the day: first look lit and tested before the model is on set, a running order by look rather than by scene, and a lighting change budgeted between groups of looks. Colour is managed on set with a calibrated monitor and a LUT agreed with the colourist, so the grade starts from the intended image.
