Virtual production cinematographer
James Coote is a cinematographer who shoots LED-volume virtual production for fashion and luxury brands. He lit the Balmain Pre-Fall 2022 film, directed by Norbert Schoerner and produced by La La Land, on a virtual stage, and Polo & Pan's “Tunnel” (dir. Zite & Léo) in XR. He works from Paris and London across Europe.
What is virtual production for a fashion film?
A set built from a wall of LED panels showing a real-time 3D environment, tracked to the camera so perspective moves correctly as the camera moves. The model stands in front of it in real light reflected from the screen. Instead of travelling to a location or compositing a green screen in post, the brand gets its world in camera, on the day, and can change it between takes.
When does it pay off for a brand?
When the campaign needs several worlds in one day, when the location is impossible or unseasonable, when the talent's time is the scarcest thing on the call sheet, or when the look depends on reflective materials (sequins, patent, metal, glass) that composite badly against green. It is not cheaper than a studio day by default; it is cheaper than three locations.
What changes for the cinematographer?
The wall is both backdrop and key light, so exposure, colour and the brightness of the virtual environment are negotiated together with the Unreal operator. Frame rate and shutter are set to the panel refresh to avoid banding; lens choice manages moiré; practical lights are added to give the talent a shape the screen cannot. James plans this with the virtual art department before the stage day, so the day is spent shooting, not calibrating.
Does he previsualise?
Yes. Through IN.TANGIBLE, the Paris studio he co-founded, the environment, camera moves and lighting can be previsualised in 3D before anyone books a stage. The same previs workflow is used on conventional commercials, so the client approves the frame before the shoot rather than after.
